La Chascona

La Chascona is one of Pablo Neruda's three houses. Over the course of my stay in Chile, I visited two of the three houses. Unfortunately, I was not able to take pictures inside either of the houses due to copyright laws but it was still an incredible experience. The house was owned in secret since he used it for his affair. The house is filled with many belongings. Many people refer to him as a collector, but he preferred to refer to himself as a "cosista", i.e. a "thing person". He owned many "things" from all over the world and made by people from all over the world. Despite this, one "thing" I found to be one of the most interesting was a painting called Matilde, the name of Neruda's secret lover (who later became his third wife). In the painting is two paintings of her face. One is supposedly the face that would be recognized by others and one that was more personal; however, in her hair is a hidden profile of Neruda's face symbolizing their clandestine relationship.
